Staying motivated is challenging, especially if you are doing a task that you hate. However, I’ll share a way you can stay motivated in any task. Simply use your personality style's core motivator.
What Motivates Your Personality?
Each personality style has a core motivator, an engine which fuels everything they do in life. This underlying motivation can be seen in all aspects of your personal and professional lives. So what’s your personality’s natural motivator? (If you do not know your personality type, you can take a test here).
Managers- The core motivation of people with the Manager Personality Style (ESTJ, ESFJ, ISTJ, ISFJ) is stability. They are driven to create order in their personal and professional lives and want to ensure that they fulfill the practical needs of others.
Explorers- People with the Explorer Personality Style (ESTP, ESFP, ISTP, ISFP) are motivated by stimulation. They want freedom to explore all the amazing physical sensations that life has to offer like travel, fine wine, gourmet food, being active, performing, and aesthetic beauty. They seek excitement in most things that they do, even if they appear introverted on the exterior.
Inspirers- The core motivator for people with the Inspirer Personality Style (ENFJ, ENFP, INFJ, INFP) is self-awareness. Everything they do involves understanding who they are, reaching their full potential, and helping others do the same.
How to Use Your Personality's Natural Motivator to Reach Your Goals
When seeking to reach your goals, what’s most important is not the goal itself, but HOW you reach it. As the old adage says, “there is more than one way to skin a cat.” Let’s look at a common goal such as health, and look at how each personality style can use their core motivator to achieve that goal.
Managers- Managers are best motivated to lose weight by thinking about their health. Do you want to be around to see your children graduate college? Do you want to prevent expensive medical bills in the future? Maybe you had relatives who had illnesses you’d like to avoid? These are a few ways people with a Manager Personality Style can use their drive for stability to achieve their health goals.
Explorers- Explorers are typically motivated to achieve health goals by thinking about physical appearance and stamina. Do you want to look good in that swimsuit? Do you want to gain muscle mass? Or maybe you want to be in peak physical performance to play sports, perform, or play with your children? These are a few ways you can use your drive for stimulation to meet the goals you set for your health.
Inspirers- Inspirers can reach health goals by channeling into their need for self-discovery. Do you feel spiritually off-balance? Are ethical issues causing you to consider a vegan diet? Is your weight affecting your self-esteem or ability to reach your full potential? These are a few things Inspirers could use to motivate themselves to meet health related goals.
Analysts- Analysts are motivated by self-mastery and can use this core motivator to reach health goals. Maybe you want to master weight loss techniques or weight training exercises? Maybe you want to be able to chisel your body to your liking? Maybe you want to be able to develop an effective training regimen? These are a few approaches that Analysts can use to motivate themselves toward their health goals.
Your core motivation can be used to achieve any goal. Every task has an angle in which you can use your core motivator; it’s just a matter of finding it and using it to push you toward your goal!
